BEIRUT: Central Inspection Bureau chief George Attieh dismissed the director of Jezzine Government hospital Friday over poor management that potentially put the lives of Lebanese citizens at risk, an informed source told The Daily Star.

The source said hospital director Joseph Kesrouani’s dismissal came after inspectors visited the hospital two weeks ago and found it “in a state of chaos that was harming its position as a center for health security in the region.”

Kesrouani could not immediatley be reached for comment.

The move to fire Kesrouani received immediate praise from caretaker Health Minister Ghassan Hasbani, who said in a statement that he hoped the CIB would speed up its work on a number of other files related to hospitals he had referred to the agency.

Both Hasbani and the informed source said Kesrouani’s violations had been administrative and financial, with the latter adding that “it’s not about corruption,” although Kesrouani remained under investigation.

Hasbani said he had referred a report on Kesrouani’s “violations” to the CIB on July 22, and had followed up on the matter after the official failed to attend a meeting of the hospital’s board of directors in his presence on Oct. 8.

“The relations of the employees with the administration, the poor management of the hospital – all of this together” made the CIB take the decision to dismiss Kesrouani, the source said.

The source added that it was Hasbani’s responsibility to appoint a new hospital head in the coming days.

“The main goal of all this is to keep public institutions on the right track,” the source said. A similar decision had been made by the CIB last year with the dismissal of the director of Kesrouan’s Bouar Public Hospital.
