In an attempt to address the Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon, the Foreign Ministry has prepared a plan to be discussed in Cabinet regarding the situation. However, the ministry, the draft reads, recognizes that this return will not be instantaneous. There are a little over 1 million refugees currently registered with the United Nations refugee agency in Lebanon, although the authorities estimate the real number to be closer to 1.5 million. The draft also sets in place a mechanism to organize refugee residencies in Lebanon. The draft also tightens procedures around birth registrations and the referral of Syrians sentenced in Lebanon to the Syrian government.
