The curtain rises on the Middle East's newest electronic music festival this weekend. Running August 10-11 Five Islands Music Festival will stage shows by 62 DJ artists and producers on five different "islands," unfurling a range of electronic music genres -- from techno, disco, Afro, house, to experimental.Thirty-nine of the acts are Lebanese and 23 international. In this regard, the festival is collaborating with Lebanese sustainable-development NGO arcenciel, which promises to oversee postfestival recycling.Organizing an event to this scale without state support is difficult and costly, according to Grand Factory managing director Samer Makarem and Bou Malham.Despite several issues with authorities, FIMF organizers were determined to bring the festival to life independently and make Lebanon a major destination for electronic music lovers.
